Getting around requires local apps — your usual tools half-work at best.
The map situation
- Google Maps: loads only with connectivity tools, and its China data is outdated with a location offset (China uses the GCJ-02 coordinate system). Use as backup only
- Amap (高德地图): the best choice — accurate, real-time transit, English interface. Set language in Settings
- Apple Maps: surprisingly decent in China, uses AutoNavi data, no offset
- Baidu Maps: most detailed for rural areas, Chinese only
Always download offline map packs for your cities over WiFi.
Translation tools
- Microsoft Translator / Google Translate: download the offline Chinese pack before arrival. Camera mode translates menus and signs instantly
- Pleco: the dictionary every China hand uses — the camera OCR add-on is worth it
- WeChat: long-press any message → Translate. Also scans QR codes everywhere
Offline lifelines
- Screenshot hotel names and addresses in Chinese — show to taxi drivers
- Save metro maps as images (each city's official app has them)
- Learn three phrases: 你好 (hello), 谢谢 (thanks), 多少钱 (how much) — pronunciation help is in any phrasebook app
Pro tip: When asking locals for help, show your destination on Amap rather than pronouncing it — tones are hard, and the map never mispronounces anything.
