The sandstone pillars that inspired Avatar's floating mountains — China's most surreal landscape. Budget 2–3 days.
Wulingyuan Scenic Area (the main park)
- Entry ticket valid 4 days (~¥227) — the park is enormous
- Yuanjiajie — the Avatar Hallelujah Mountains viewpoint; take the Bailong glass elevator (world's tallest outdoor lift)
- Tianzi Mountain — sea of peaks at its best after rain clears
- Golden Whip Stream — easy 2-hour valley walk between the pillars, monkeys included (don't feed them)
- Use the free park shuttle buses between zones; distances are deceptive
Tianmen Mountain (separate, in the city)
- The world's longest cable car (7.5 km, 30 min) from downtown to the summit
- Glass skywalks clinging to a 1,400m cliff — vertigo guaranteed
- Heaven's Gate — the natural arch, reached by climbing (or escalator down) 999 steps
- Half a day; book the morning time slot and pray for clear weather
Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon
Home of the Glass Bridge — 430m long, 300m above the canyon floor. Half-day trip from Wulingyuan town.
2-day plan
- Day 1: Wulingyuan — Bailong Elevator → Yuanjiajie → Tianzi Mountain
- Day 2: Tianmen Mountain morning → Grand Canyon Glass Bridge afternoon
Practical
- Stay in Wulingyuan town for park days
- Fog is common — check forecasts and be flexible; the pillars emerging from clouds is actually the magic shot
- Reachable by high-speed rail from Changsha (2h) or flights to Hehua Airport
